Times Tables

We aim to make learning times tables an enjoyable and successful part of school life. Children are given regular opportunities to practise multiplication facts and develop the quick, confident recall that supports them across many areas of mathematics.

In Year 3, children are introduced to Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS) and are encouraged to play regularly both at school and at home. As part of the maths curriculum, children learn the 2, 5, 10, 3, 4 and 8 times tables. Regular practice is built into maths lessons, including whole-class chanting and other recall activities to help children develop confidence and fluency.

In Year 4, children take part in a daily Mastering Number session, which helps them develop secure number sense and achieve quick and accurate recall of multiplication and division facts. Children also continue to use Times Tables Rock Stars regularly to practise and strengthen their recall.

Each year group has a Times Tables Rock Stars lunchtime club, where children can drop in to practise and play. These clubs are open to all children and also provide additional opportunities for those who would benefit from some extra practice and support.

In Years 5 and 6, we continue to monitor children's times table fluency. Where children still have gaps in their multiplication facts, they are given additional targeted practice and support to help them develop secure and confident recall.

We encourage children to enjoy practising their times tables through friendly competition and rewards. Children can take part in Times Tables Rock Stars battles and have opportunities to win trophies and earn badges as they practise, improve and celebrate their achievements.

In June of Year 4, children take the statutory Multiplication Tables Check (MTC). This checks their ability to recall multiplication facts fluently. Alongside our ongoing assessment, the results help us identify children who would benefit from further support as they move into Years 5 and 6.
